Modern Apprentice Work Based SVQ or NVQ Qualification

What is a Modern Apprenticeship?
Modern Apprenticeships are aimed at those aged 16 or above and capable of achieving a vocational qualification (VQ) at Level Two or above. The programme can be used to train existing employees or new employees. Any company in Scotland - whatever its size - can take part in the programme. Potential trainees need to get a job before they can take part in the programme. People without a job, however, can contact a local training company such as ourselves AD Services (Scotland) Ltd;  We will make it our priority to help anyone to gain full time employment leading to a recognised National Vocational Qualification, further we will make every attempt to find full time work with a local employer who is willing to allow them to achieve a Modern Apprentice Qualification.  Further detailed information is avaiable from Skills Development Scotland.

What is an SVQ or NVQ?

An SVQ is a Scottish Vocational Qualification, and NVQ is a National Vocational Qualification, the only difference between them is that the NVQ is a qualification delivered by the qualification awarding body for England, Wales and Northern Ireland, the SVQ is a qualification delivered under the Scottish Qualification authority (SQA).

NVQ/SVQ qualifications are work based, this means that they are gained by employees performing their normal duties and demonstrating their competence to carry these duties out over an extended period of time at their place of work during normal working hours.

Where do National Vocational Qualifications fit into the Workplace?

You do not have to employ specialist teachers, you already have the expertise available in your own workforce.

The tried and tested way of passing on skills to young workers is to teach them the skills of their trade by being apprenticed to a skilled journeyman, in this way they have one-to-one tuition from an expert in their particular field.

The experienced tradesman acts as a guide, demonstrating how a task should be done and by explaining what they are doing as they go then allowing the apprentice to carry out the simpler operations under their supervision.

As the apprentice gains in confidence and experience the mentor steps back allowing more complex tasks to be carried out until the apprentice is capable of performing the work on without any intervention from the journeyman.

What makes up a work based qualification?

Work based qualifications can be achieved at a level to suit the individual, the employer and the industry. Work based qualification are achieved at five levels which correspond to Scottish Credit and Qualifications Network as follows:

To achieve a modern apprentice level you need to obtain the correct mix of a work based qualification as specified in the framework for your particular industry. For example to achieve a Modern Apprenticeship in one of the Engineering Disciplines a candidate would need to achieve a level 2 SVQ plus a level 3 SVQ and a suitable National Certificate. The average timescale to achieve a full Modern apprenticeship would be three to four years to cover the level 2 and three certificate, the NC is normally achieved by attending day release at a local college for one day each week over a two year period. Whereas a Modern Apprenticeship in Administration can be achieved without the need for achieving a National Certificate or attending college.
