Modern Apprenticeship Opportunities in Glasgow and Lanarkshire

INTRODUCTION

Modern Apprenticeships (MAs) is a National Training Programme which is aimed at providing a contribution to the training for those in employment.  It is the Government’s view that MAs provide security of employment for the candidate whilst developing skills that are relevant within the workplace.

It is the responsibility of Skills Development Scotland (SDS) to ensure a consistent approach is adhered to when approving funding for the delivery of Modern Apprenticeship (MA) qualifications and this policy provides clarification on the following areas:

  • who will benefit from SDS funding of MAs;
  •
    what SDS current priorities are;
  • what SDS will fund and the reasons for doing so.

In addition, the policy for approval of MA candidate assignments for the frameworks in scope for SDS funding is detailed.

FUNDING ELIGIBILITY

Funding is prioritised towards certain groups, geographies and industries in line with Scottish Government objectives as outlined in “Skills for Scotland”.   There is a finite budget for the National Training Programmes (NTP) and as there are many competing priorities public support for employer and individual demand for MAs is not automatic

PRIORITY CLIENT GROUPS – POLICY GUIDANCE

In 2011/12 SDS will continue to prioritise funding towards those aged 16 to 19 who have the ability to achieve a Modern Apprenticeship.  It should be noted that all MA candidates must have employed status.

MA Level 2 (16 - 19)

All new entrants must be registered at MA Level 2.  Existing trainees registered as Skillseekers can transfer to the MA level 2 framework but it is not a mandatory requirement.

MA Level 3 (16-19)

SDS will continue to prioritise funding towards those aged 16 and 19 who have the ability to achieve a level 3 Modern Apprenticeship or higher.

MA aged 20+ - Government support for individuals in this age group is targeted towards specific sectors and thus only the following MA frameworks which can be delivered by will be eligible for funding (see section MA (20-24 & 25+) for the additional 5,000 MAs):

MA FRAMEWORKS

A full list of frameworks approved by the Modern Apprenticeship Group (MAG) can be found on the Alliance of the Sector Skills Council Website see:

http://www.alliancescotland.org/ModernApprenticeships/MAFrameworks/MAFrameworks.aspx

It should be noted that once new frameworks are approved by MAG, any new starts funded by SDS must follow the new MA framework.  No new entrants should work towards superseded qualifications including non-MA Vocational Qualifications.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES

SDS is committed to working in partnership to promote equality of opportunity and works to promote equal access to and participation in training opportunities. SDS recognises individuals different needs, situations and goals, and seeks to remove barriers limiting their participation and success in training programmes, tailoring solutions to individual clients.
